چکیده

The purpose of this work is to present and to discuss a methodology for the assessment of materials intended to HVDC-XLPE cables, particularly as regards the evaluation of the effects of material formulation on space charge accumulation within the insulation. Sample design, testing method and protocol and criteria used for the material evaluation are specifically considered. It will be shown through several examples that criteria such as the Field Enhancement Factor (FEF) and the space-averaged charge density (QM) are indeed sensitive to material formulation. The question of the representativeness of tests performed on flat specimens vs. model or full cables will be discussed.

The effect of composition and processing on electric characteristics of XLPE for use in HVDC cable applications

Polyethylene exhibits many key characteristics including low dielectric loss, high breakdown strength and good processability. Most modern extruded high voltage cables employ cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) as the insulation material. The main advantage of XLPE is its excellent thermo-mechanical properties; it is relatively cheap and has low dielectric loss and low conductivity making it an id...

DC Model Cable under Polarity Inversion and Thermal Gradient: Build-Up of Design-Related Space Charge

In the field of energy transport, High-Voltage DC (HVDC) technologies are booming at present due to the more flexible power converter solutions along with needs to bring electrical energy from distributed production areas to consumption sites and to strengthen large-scale energy networks. These developments go with challenges in qualifying insulating materials embedded in those systems and in t...

Space Charge Accumulation under the Effects of Temperature Gradient on Solid Dielectric Dc Cable

It is well known that existence and accumulation of space charge within the insulating material poses threat to the reliability in the operation of dc power cables. When the cables are loaded under high voltage direct current (HVDC), temperature gradient is developed across the insulation material. In this paper, commercial ac XLPE power cables were used under an application voltage of 80 kV dc...

Long-life Xlpe Insulated Power Cable

Crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) has become the globally preferred insulation for power cables, both for distribution and transmission system applications. This insulation system provides cost efficiency in operation and procurement, as well as lower environmental and maintenance requirements when compared to older impregnated paper systems. The purpose of this paper is to outline some of the de...

High Frequency Characteristics of Medium Voltage XLPE Power Cables

The response of a cable can be used to analyze the variation of the material characteristics along its length. For diagnosis of possible ageing, it is necessary to know how cable design, material properties and cable insulation ageing affects the wave propagation. A cable model has therefore been worked out based upon the high frequency properties of the cable insulation and conductor systems. ...
